So. I’ve been a vegetarian for about six months now. I don’t find it difficult at all. Of course, I was pretty much a vegetarian for many years before anyway; I ate meat perhaps once every 1-2 months.
Since actually making the decision to become a proper vegetarian, I’ve also been phasing out dairy and eggs. The only times when I eat dairy and egg is when I do not have control over the ingredients. Which is usually when eating chocolate. Or cakes made by Tony. He’s the cake baker in our house.
I hope we can find some vegan cake recipes which we both like, eventually. But for the moment I don’t want Tony to feel like I’m making him eat stuff that he doesn’t like.
It would obviously be less complicated if he were a vegetarian too, but it’s not really up to me to make that choice for him. Tony is a carnivore, and there’s no changing that. Because he doesn’t like vegetables or pulses! At most he’ll eat a few spoonfuls of peas or sweetcorn. ;-)
In the last couple of days I’ve been looking more into where I can buy foods that are vegan. And I found one site which has a lot of different things (makes it easier when you don’t have to look through hundreds of sites!) and it just makes me so happy.
Before I started on this path I didn’t realise how much variety there. How many delicious things which are vegan. You may think that if you become a vegetarian/vegan, that all you’ll be eating is beans and nuts and pretty boring. But it’s just not true. There are so many things I want to try. I’m eating more different things than before.
I trawl vegetarian/vegan blogs, printing off fabulous recipes – and I actually try them! It’s so much fun! Because I know it’s all good stuff. Because I know that it’s 90% certain that I’ll like it. And that is amazing. I’ve always been a picky eater and I suspect that may to some degree have been because food usually had meat in it. Most of the traditional Danish dishes have meat in them – and I’ve never been keen on those…
But now I know there’s a fantastic, colourful world of food out there. It’s so exciting! And this excitement means I want to cook more. Experiment and come up with my own recipes. I’m a far less lazy cook than
I used to be. And that makes me so happy.
